PF Wage limit increased from 15000 to 25000

EPFO Wage Ceiling Increased to Rs. 25,000

EPFO Wage Ceiling Increased to Rs. 25,000

The Government has approved an important change in the EPFO wage ceiling. The mandatory EPFO wage ceiling has been increased from Rs. 15,000 to Rs. 25,000 per month, effective from 17 September 2026. The interesting part is that this limit has not been changed since 2014, when it was increased to Rs. 15,000.

What is the wage ceiling?

In simple words, the wage ceiling is the maximum amount of basic wages + DA considered for mandatory EPF contribution, subject to the applicable EPF rules.

Earlier, the ceiling was Rs. 15,000.

So, where the statutory ceiling was being applied:

Employee PF = Rs. 15,000 × 12% = Rs. 1,800 per month

With the new ceiling:

Employee PF = Rs. 25,000 × 12% = Rs. 3,000 per month

So there can be an additional Rs. 1,200 deduction from the employee’s salary every month, where the higher ceiling applies. But it is not only about the extra deduction The additional amount is going towards your retirement savings. The employer also contributes towards EPF/EPS as applicable.

So, on one side, your monthly take-home salary may reduce slightly. On the other side, your retirement savings will increase.

For example, the difference between contributing on Rs. 15,000 and Rs. 25,000 is:

Rs. 10,000 × 12% = Rs. 1,200 per month

That is Rs. 14,400 per year going additionally towards PF from the employee’s side. Over a long period, this additional contribution can make a meaningful difference to the retirement corpus because of the accumulated contributions and interest.

One important point

This does not mean that everyone’s PF deduction will automatically increase by Rs. 1,200. The actual impact will depend on the employee’s EPF membership, salary structure and whether the employer is currently restricting contributions to the statutory ceiling or already contributing on higher wages. So, before assuming that your take-home salary will reduce, check your existing PF contribution.

Overall, the change is significant because the EPFO ceiling is being revised after more than a decade. For employees who come under the revised ceiling, it means a little less cash in hand today, but potentially higher retirement savings over the years.
