PF payment due date for March 2020
Considering the unprecedented situation created by COVID-19 and the lockdown announced by the Central Government from midnight on 24.03.2020 to prevent the spread of Covid-19, the due date for filing the Electronic Challan Cum Return (ECR) for the wage month of March 2020 has been extended up to 15.05.2020 for employers who have paid wages to their employees for March 2020.
The due date for March 2020 is ordinarily 15.04.2020, so a grace period of thirty days has been allowed to establishments covered under the EPF & MP Act, 1952, to remit contributions and administrative charges due for March 2020.
The Ministry of Labour and Employment made this decision to support and provide relief to employers of establishments that have disbursed wages for March 2020 to their employees. It also serves as an incentive for employers to continue wage payments during the COVID-19 pandemic. This move aligns with the objective of the Pradhan Mantri Garib Kalyan Yojana, which aims to prevent employment disruption and ensure employees continue earning during this crisis.
This relief will benefit approximately six lakh establishments, enabling them to file ECRs without default and ensuring wage payments to nearly five crore employees.
Employers must declare the date of wage disbursement for March 2020 in the ECR for March 2020.
The ECR, with the said declaration, and contributions and administrative charges for March 2020 are now due on or before 15.05.2020.
Employers disbursing wages for March 2020 will not only receive an extension on the due date for EPF payments but also avoid liability for interest and penalties if they remit the payment on or before 15.05.2020.
