Validity of E-Way Bill changed from the date 01-01-2021
When you generate an E-Way Bill for transporting goods, the validity of that bill is calculated based on two main factors: the distance to be traveled and the type of cargo being transported, such as Normal Cargo or Over Dimensional Cargo.
Key Update w.r.t E-Way Bill validity:
On December 22, 2020, a new notification (No. 94/2020) brought some important changes to the rules regarding E-Way Bill validity. According to this update, the validity of an E-Way Bill has been modified under Rule 138(10) of the CGST Rules, which took effect from January 1, 2021.
Under the new rule:
- The E-Way Bill will now be valid for 1 day for every 200 km of travel, as opposed to the previous rule, which granted 1 day for every 100 km.
- For Over Dimensional Cargo or multimodal shipments (especially those involving transportation by ship), different rules may apply.
- If the distance to be covered exceeds 200 km, an additional day will be granted for each additional 200 km (or part of it).
Type of Cargo | Distance | Validity of e-waybill |
---|---|---|
Normal | Up to 200 kms | 1 day |
For every additional 200 kms | 1 day extra | |
Over dimensional cargo | Up to 20 kms | 1 day |
For every additional 20 kms | 1 day extra |
Can the validity of an E-Way Bill be extended?
Yes, the validity of an E-Way Bill can be extended in exceptional circumstances. If it expires before your goods reach their destination, you can request an extension. You can do this within eight hours from the time the E-Way Bill expires.
