Salary slip / pay slip is not a just formal or casual document. In India issuing salary slip is mandatory under various laws. It not just to issue salary slip but laws also provides time to issue, contents , format of the salary slip. In this post will understand legal requirements and format of salary slips. Below is the illustrative list of few laws that mandates salary slip.

- Rule 78(1)(b) of the Contract Labour (Regulation and Abolition) Central Rules, 1971 mandates that every contractor must issue a wage slip in Form XIX.
- Minimum wages: Minimum Wages (Central) Rules, 1950 ( adopted by states) mandates issuing salary slip in Form XI under Rule 26(1)
- Code on Wages, 2019 ( not yet implemented) also mandates issuing pay slip.
- Wages Slip in Form T under The Tamil Nadu Shops and Establishment Rules, 1948
Contents on salary slip: Salary slip must contain following details:

- Employee details (Name, Employee ID, PAN, UAN, etc.)
- Name & address of the employer
- Work Details: Nature, designation and location of work
- Attendance details (present-absent days, OT etc)
- Earnings for the period (Basic salary, HRA, allowances, period, etc.)
- Deductions (EPF, Professional Tax, TDS, etc.)
- Net Pay (Take-Home Salary)
