Cabinet Approves PAN 2.0 Project

A Smarter Identity for a Smarter You-PAN 2.o

all you need to know about PAN 2.0

On November 25, 2024, the Indian government, led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, approved the PAN 2.0 Project, an ambitious new initiative worth Rs. 1,435 crore. This project aims to make the process of getting and using PAN (Permanent Account Number) and TAN (Tax Deduction and Collection Account Number) more efficient and user-friendly.

What Is the PAN 2.0 Project?

The PAN 2.0 Project is an upgrade to the current PAN and TAN system. It’s a digital transformation that will improve the entire process of registering for PAN, updating details, and verifying PAN/TAN information. The new system will be quicker, more accurate, and much easier for taxpayers to use.

Key Benefits and Features of PAN 2.0:

  • Faster & Easier Access: PAN/TAN services will be quicker and more convenient, with less waiting time for updates or applications.
  • Better Data Consistency: Ensures your personal details are consistent across all government systems, reducing errors.
  • Eco-friendly & Cost-effective: A paperless, online system reduces paperwork, cuts processing costs, and supports sustainability.
  • Improved Security: Enhanced protection of personal data with features like a PAN Data Vault, reducing identity theft risks.
  • Single Portal: A unified platform for all PAN/TAN services for easier user access.
  • Free PAN Issuance: PAN will be issued at no cost with faster processing times. Presently only individuals can apply free pan.
  • Dedicated Support: A call center and helpdesk to assist with user queries and issues

PAN as a Common Identifier Across Government Services

A major highlight of the PAN 2.0 Project is that PAN will now act as a “common identifier” for all digital services offered by government agencies. This means your PAN number will be used to access various government services online, making it much easier to manage your interactions with the government.

What’s Next for PAN 2.0?

Once this upgrade is complete, you’ll experience a more modern and digital system. The PAN 2.0 Project will consolidate the core and non-core activities of PAN/TAN services, improving everything from validation to registration. It will also provide a better digital experience for taxpayers.

How PAN 2.0 Will Be Different from the Existing Setup:

  1. Unified Portal: All PAN/TAN services (allotment, updation, AADHAAR linking, online validation, e-PAN requests, etc.) will be available on a single portal, replacing the current three separate portals (e-Filing, UTIITSL, Protean e-Gov).
  2. Paperless Process: The entire process will be fully online and paperless, eliminating the need for physical documents and making the system more efficient.
  3. Taxpayer Facilitation: PAN allotment, updation, and corrections will be free of charge. e-PAN will be sent to the registered email, while physical PAN cards will require a ₹50 fee for domestic delivery (Rs. 15 + India post charges at actuals for outside India).

Future of current PAN: Smarter, Faster, and Eco-Friendly with PAN 2.0

The Project is about upgrading the system and improving the processes around PAN (Permanent Account Number) and TAN (Tax Deduction and Collection Account Number). This includes making the system more efficient, secure, and easier to use.

Will existing PAN card holders need to apply for a new PAN under the upgraded system?

No, existing PAN card holders will not be required to apply for a new PAN under PAN 2.0 system. Your current PAN number will remain unchanged. The PAN 2.0 Project aims to improve the experience, but it won’t require you to apply for a new PAN.

The PAN 2.0 Project is a significant move towards Digital India, to make PAN and tax-related services faster, safer, and more user-friendly. With this upgrade, the government seeks to provide a more efficient, secure, and eco-friendly experience for taxpayers. Expect fewer delays, enhanced security, and easier access to government services using your PAN number in the future.
